Honest about the trade: a PNG of your JPG is exact, and usually much bigger.

Convert a JPG to PNG in your browser. The PNG is lossless but usually larger than the JPG, and the tool shows both file sizes so you can see by how much.

The guide

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Step 1

Drop a JPG or JPEG file. PNG is already selected as the output.

  2. Step 2

Keep the width as it is to preserve every pixel. There is no quality slider, because PNG doesn't throw anything away.

  3. Step 3

Read the size line — expect the PNG to be larger — then download the .png.

A JPG is lossy: it discarded some detail when it was saved. Converting to PNG doesn't bring that back. What it does is freeze the picture as it is now, so you can edit and re-save it without losing a little more each time, or hand it to something that only accepts PNG.

That is also why the PNG is bigger. JPG's compression is designed for photographs; PNG stores pixels exactly, and a photograph as a PNG is commonly several times the size of the JPG. The size line reports it as “larger” rather than hiding it.

A JPG has no transparent pixels, so the PNG won't have any either. To cut out a background first, CapyBg on this site removes it in your browser.

Questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No. The PNG is a lossless copy of what the JPG already shows, not a restoration of what it lost.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

Because it keeps every pixel exactly instead of approximating them. The bigger the photo, the bigger the gap.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. A JPG is fully opaque, and converting the format doesn't remove the background. Run it through CapyBg first if you want one cut out.

Is my photo sent anywhere?

No — the conversion runs inside this page, so the photo stays on your device and nothing is stored once you close the tab.
