How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. Step 1

Drop a PNG, or paste one from your clipboard. JPG is already selected as the output.

  2. Step 2

If the image has transparent areas, choose the colour they are flattened onto — white until you change it — and move the quality slider.

  3. Step 3

Check the file sizes shown, then download the .jpg.

JPG has no transparency, so every clear pixel in a PNG has to become some colour. This tool fills the background with the colour in “Flatten onto” before it encodes, which means you pick it — a logo for a white page gets white, one for a dark slide gets a dark fill — instead of finding out afterwards.

Quality runs from 0.50 to 1.00 and starts at 0.85. A photo saved as a PNG usually shrinks a lot as a JPG; a flat graphic or a screenshot with sharp text may not, and JPG softens hard edges. The line under the preview shows the real size of the file that will download, and says “larger” when the JPG is bigger than the PNG you dropped.

Questions

What happens to the transparent parts of my PNG?

They are filled with the “Flatten onto” colour, which starts as white. The JPG has no transparency, so there's no way to keep it — pick the fill that suits where the image will sit.

Why is my JPG bigger than the PNG?

It can happen with flat colours, icons and screenshots, which PNG compresses well. The size line says “larger” when it does. Lower the quality, or keep the PNG.

What quality should I choose?

0.85 is a safe start for photos. Slide it down while watching the preview, and stop just before you can see the difference.

Does the file leave my computer?

No. Your browser decodes the PNG and writes the JPG itself. There's no upload step to wait for, and nothing is kept afterwards.
